Alignment and priorities
In the research strategy - Wildlife, Environment and Society - Research strategy for the period 2021-2026 for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s research funding from the Wildlife Management Fund the framework and direction for the announcement of research funding is presented.
In accordance with the research strategy, the Swedish EPA requests applications relevant for the following prioritised areas of research:
Complexity in wildlife biology and management
- Multispecies management
- Conflict and collaboration
- Large-scale and system-wide changes
Instruments and practices for wildlife management
- Developing, testing and quality-assuring methods for monitoring
- Theory and modelling
- Damage assessment and mitigation
- Effects of management
The challenges within each prioritised areas of research, which are partly overlapping, are large and multifaceted, and Swedish EPA welcomes both intra- and interdisciplinary research. Transdisciplinary research that crosses the border between the research community and the rest of society is also welcomed. Within all prioritised research areas, collaboration between several researchers or research groups and between research and wildlife management is often important.
A more detailed description of the prioritised research areas and their background, the purpose of the research funding from the Wildlife Management Fund, and principles and conditions for research funding etc can be found in the research strategy.
Two calls for funding
The Swedish EPA has divided this year's call for grants from the Wildlife Management Fund into two different calls/forms of grant for applications in PRISMA:
- Project
- Review of current knowledge
Under both calls you can apply for funding for up to three years.
The arrangement of scientific conferences and work-shops and to establish international consortia to develop projects aimed at funding within the EU or other international research funding bodies can also be applied for under the call Review of current knowledge.
More information on each call can be found in:
Practical instructions
To be eligible to apply for funding the main applicant must hold a PhD and conduct research at a university, university college, research institute or government agency carrying out research as part of their mandate. The main applicant must be affiliated with a Swedish organisation with a Swedish corporate identity number (organisationsnummer), and the organisation must be approved by the Swedish EPA as an administrating organisation.
The final report from applicants and co-applicants previously funded by the Swedish EPA, where the project period has expired, must have been received and approved before a new application can be granted.
Granted researchers are expected to participate in the Swedish EPA’s annual research conference and allocate resources for communication with authorities and other stakeholders in wildlife management.
How to apply
The application is made electronically via the Swedish EPA’s application portal Prisma. If you have not previously registered in PRISMA, you must first create a user profile and create an account at the website. The application is reviewed by an international review panel and should preferably be written in English. For further instructions se “Instructions for applicants”.
